We have an exciting line up of meetings for 2026! Our meetings are, generally, the first Wednesday, May – October, 11:30am -1:30pm at the Legion Hall (333 Wallingford Street, Blowing Rock, NC). Attendance is not required to be a club member.

Rare and Endangered Plants of Southern Appalachia – May 6 – Elizabeth Trott, Botanical Garden and Exhibit Content Curator, Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation. She will introduce us to some of the rare and endangered plants found on Grandfather and Roan mountains.

Invasive Plants: the Echo of Hurricane Helene – June 3 – Dr. AnnKatrin Rose
Associate Professor. Biology ASU, will update us on the Mile-A-Minute biocontrol efforts, some of the most problematic weeds resulting from hurricane-related flooding, and how it’s being addressed.

Moss: It’s Role in the World and Our Gardens – July 8 – Leigha Henson, ASU, and currently a guide at Arborcrest Gardens in Boone. She will be joined by Annika Davidson, Greenhouse Manager, ASU, Biology department. NOTE: Meeting will be held at Joyce Zellner’s Barn , 3664 Winkler’s Creek, BR

Creating Gardens for Biodiversity – August 5 – Dr. Patrick McMillan of Expeditions with Patrick McMillan on PBS and horticulturist for the new 7 acre park in Cary. He will be talking to us about gardening for life with natural biodiversity.

End of the Year Celebration and Potluck Lunch – October 7 – Join us to celebrate our friendship and say ““goodbye” to another wonderful year in beautiful Blowing Rock.


2025

Landscaping for Privacy – May 7, 2025 – Paige Patterson, Watauga County NC Extension Service Agent showed us how to create our own personal retreat. Paige provided inspiration and practical advice by sharing her award-winning publication describing landscaping with plants which can thrive in Blowing Rock.

Art in the Garden – June 4, 2025 – We met Cantey Tanner, Sculptor, and creator of the beloved “Jesse” statue. She explained where she finds inspiration, her artistic journey, and how her work comes into being.

Tablescapes, and more! – July 9, 2025 – Lead by Pat Wheeler, BR Garden Club member. Pat, who creates dozens of arrangements for the Blowing Rock Tour of Homes, demonstrated how she creates one of her stunning arrangements. She also shared how her mother created “Friendship”.

Danielle Stewart, co-founder of the Mustard Seed Garden, showed us how to make impactful floral arrangements that tell a colorful story. From a road-side stand she bought with her husband in 1992, to the thriving business employing dozens today, Danielle shared some of her journey with the club.

We learned about the good work Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture is doing to connect ag producers with consumers in our area. Members were excited to learn the BRWIA Food Hub now delivers orders in Blowing Rock for pickup each Thursday.

We kicked off our 2024 season with Brian Antzcak of Bug Lovers Native Plants, who grows plants native to the High Country. He helped us learn more about the relationship between plants and insects and the critical link native plants play in the food web.
